Topping just above 3,000m, Jebel Shams (‘Mountain of the Sun’) is the highest peak on the Arabian Peninsula. It is not uncommon to see snow and hail in the winter months, and in the summer months is still prone to inclement weather. Within this environment is what is commonly called Oman ‘Grand Canyon’, a majestic semi-circular canyon, mid-way around the rim of which is the ‘Balcony Walk. Although generally classified as ‘moderate’ in intensity, the drops can be sheer so walkers should be comfortable with heights. On the return trip to Muscat the 400-year old village of Al Hamra offers some glimpses into the traditional village living of years gone by.

Al Hamra is a 400-year-old town in the region Ad Dakhiliyah, in northeastern Oman. The village boasts amazing agricultural terraces, beautiful alleys, and old houses built on top of solid rocks. The combination of these elements gives a visitor to Misfat Al Abriyeen a dramatic image from the viewing platform. Jabel Shams " The Mountain Sun" is popular sightseeing in the Grand Canyon. In the summer, the temperature is around 25 °C (68 °F) and in the winter it drops to less than 0 °C (32 °F). Note: The tour can start from 2 people and above.


Al Hamra Geological Tour


The guide will pick you up from the residence heeding to Albatinah Provence. Wadi Bni Auf is the starting point of the off-road experience. However, after driving in an unpaved road, the guide will stop and show you the entrance of the snake canyon and the rocks that smell like a rotten egg. He will also explain to you the interesting facts about petroleum and its relationship with that smell. After that, the journey will keep moving for almost another hour in the mountain road passing by isolated villages, farms and Falaj until you reach the balcony in Hatt Mountain to enjoy the view of the road from 2000m above sea level. After this great adventure, our guide will take you to Alhoota cave to examine the cave from inside and visit the geology museum. After that, the guide will take you to Misfat Al Abriyeen to take a walk in between the old houses and farms and have a good meal in the village.
