The Gap of Dunloe Full-Day Tour from Killarney


Amazing and best tour to visit the Killarney National Park. Considering a walking, rambling or hiking tour? Look no further as The Gap of Dunloe is 7 miles (11 kilometers) and takes approximately 2 hrs 30 minutes. If visitors are not up for walking or hiking then there is an alternative of the traditional Irish Jaunting Carriage (horse and carriage) to take visitors through the Gap of Dunloe. The extra cost is E 35 per person for the Horse Carriages and payable directly . Boats will be waiting to escort the visitors through the magnificent three Lakes of Killarney to Ross Castle. An amazing adventure tour.


Gap of Dunloe Tour (Boat & Bus)


The Gap of Dunloe day tour is a journey which encompasses Killarney’s entire National Park. During the tour, guests will see such sights as the Gap of Dunloe, the Old Weir Bridge and Ross Castle. The tour involves 3 separate stages: 1. Bus Transport from our office at the Old Weir Lodge on Muckross Road, Killarney to Kate Kearney’s Cottage at the beginning of the Gap of Dunloe. 2. Travel through the world famous glacial valley that is the Gap of Dunloe. Horse and carriage transport is available to rent (extra payable directly to the ponyman) when you arrive at Kate Kearney’s Cottage. Alternatively, you can walk through the ‘Gap’. 3. Boat transport through the National Park with one of our experienced Drivers. The boat tour brings you through the lakes and rivers of the Park. A guided tour by the driver full of folklore and legends will ensure a memorable day for all ages. Note: depending on water levels, a moderate walk through an uneven wooded area may be required.

The Gap of Dunloe is a magnificent defile running four miles between the McGillycuddy Reeks and the Purple mountain group. At the entrance to the gap is a famous cottage, named after a woman called Kate Kearney who died in childbirth at the age of 102!

Meet with your Tour Rep at the Wooden Bridge in Ross Castle before being transferred (complimentary) by vehicle to the Gap of Dunloe, where you will begin your adventure at the foothills of Ireland’s highest mountain range. From there, hop on board a traditional Pony and Trap Cart for a seven-mile journey to experience the magic of the Gap of Dunloe with its dramatic glaciated valleys and awe-inspiring views. Also gain a unique insight into rural Ireland as you traverse through the unspoilt beauty and isolation of the Black Valley. Break at Lord Brandon’s Cottage for lunch where you can enjoy a light snack, (not included) before embarking on a fourteen-mile voyage through all three of Killarney’s Lakes aboard a traditional Open Top Boat. Sit back, relax and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Killarney National Park by water as you are guided through the Lakes of Killarney.


Bus, Boat & Jaunting Cart Tour (Jaunting Cart Paid Separately)


Discover the beautiful Lakes of Killarney and the breath-taking Gap of Dunloe with our Bus, Boat & Jaunting Cart Tour. The tour includes full bus transfers (in the morning and return in the afternoon) and a boat journey through the three Lakes of Killarney (approximately 90 minutes in length). Please note the Jaunting cart price is not included in this tour. The journey through the Gap of Dunloe (approximately 7mile/11km) takes the Jaunting cart's approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to make the journey. Please Note – The Jaunting Cars are a separate business to Gap of Dunloe Tours and are an additional cost to the tour price. You pay the Ponymen direct for the Jaunting Car journey. The charge is €120 per jaunting cart, and the cart carries a maximum of 4 people. Please bring cash to pay the Ponymen.


The Gap of Dunlop – Day Trip (subject to minimum numbers)


Beautiful guided tour through the 3 Lakes of Killarney. Guests will enjoy 90 minutes of the best of Killarney's scenery. Boat departs from Ross Castle on Killarneys lower lake and brings guests on a meandering tour through Lakes, rivers and bridges to the upper lake. Your captain will regale you with stories and history and apply Irish wit at times to ensure you leave with a mind of information but also a smile on your face. This tour allows guests see Ross Castle, Brickeen Bridge, Dinis Cottage, the Meeting of the Waters, The Old Weir Bridge and Lord Brandon's Cottage. While navigating the Lakes and rivers, it is also likely you will encounter Red and Sike Deer as well as our famous White Tailed Sea Eagles. This really is a see it all tour and is highly recommended. Once guests are dropped to Lord Brandon's Cottage they can walk, cycle or enjoy a daunting car ride through the world famous Gap of Dunloe.


Lakes and Trails Tour (Boat & Bike)


This is transport for 1 passenger and their bike through the 3 lakes of Killarney National Park. Boats leave Ross Castle at 10.30am only each morning and travel to Lord Brandon's Cottage in the Gap of Dunloe. Highlights along the way include a visit to Innisfallen Island to see the 7th century Monastic ruins and the chance to see some of our White Tailed Eagles. The distance from Lord Brandon's Cottage to Killarney is 25km, cyclists should be aware of some steep ascents and descents. Good news is that this isn't a race! After having lunch at Lord Brandon's Cottage, cyclists can travel through the Gap of Dunloe at their leisure. Stopping to have a drink at the Kate Kearney's Cottage is definitely recommended before continuing to Killarney. This is a great way to see the Gap of Dunloe at your own pace. Please note that bike rental is not included in the tour, nor is the cycle guided. Passengers must secure their own bike rental in Killarney before progressing to Ross Castle.


Bus & Boat Tour


The Gap of Dunloe Tour is a must do for visitors to Killarney. The ‘Adventure’ begins daily from our head office at O’Connor’s Pub, 7 High St., Killarney at 10:00am for check in. We can also collect clients from their accommodation in the Killarney area. Your journey begins with a bus trip to Kate Kearney’s Cottage or Ross Castle (recommended starting point for walkers as it allows more time). From here visitors make the 7 mile walk (please allow 2.5 to 3 hours for the walk). For those who do not wish to walk Jaunting cart’s are also available (at extra cost of €25 per person) to take the clients through the natural unspoilt beauty of the Black Valley, a walker’s paradise. Upon reaching Lord Brandon’s Cottage, there will be time to enjoy refreshments (not included) at the Cafe, before taking your boat trip through the Lakes of Killarney to Ross Castle where your bus will be waiting to take you back to Killarney. As noted, this tour can also be done in reverse.
