Wat Ratchabophit was built from 1869-70, on the order of King Rama V, as the symbolic temple of his reign. The construction of the temple on a 10 rai plot was supervised by Prince Praditworakan, a skilled royal craftsman. This temple was beautifully designed and decorated.

The building of the shrine was built according to the popular shrine in the south of China. What makes this shrine attractive is the fame of the Tiger God who is believed to have an extreme power of blessing worshipers with good fortune. The story of the Tiger God was believed to be linked with LuangPorRuang of WatMahannapara (Wat Mahan) since it reflects the relationship between Thai and Chinese population in this area.

Growing unrest over a regime that had overstayed its welcome started to come to a head in June 1973 when several students were expelled from Thammasat University for “anti-government activities”. Protests ensued and the student leaders were arrested around 5 October. The students were later released, but then re-arrested on 13 October.

Democracy Monument is located on Thanon Ratchadamnoen. The monument was commissioned to commemorate the 1932 Siamese coup d’etat which led to the establishment of a constitutional monarchy. The foundation was erected on 24 June 1939 during the premiership of General Pibul Songkram.

Wat Suthat Thepwararam was commissioned by King Rama I (1782-1809) to shelter a 13th-century bronze Buddha sculpture from Sukhotai. The temple was completed during King Rama III’s reign (1824-1851). The wall frescoes inside the main prayer hall detail the previous 24 incarnations of Buddha.

In 1846, King Nangklao (Rama III) ordered construction of the temple. … The king himself was said to have been involved in designing the plans for the temple which imitates two ancient Buddhist structures that previously existed in India and Sri Lanka.

Mahakan Fort is the easternmost fort of Rattanakosin’s walls, now situated next to Phan Fa Lilat Bridge of Ratchadamnoen Avenue and the junction of Khlong Maha Nak and Khlong Rop Krung. The fort, also octagonal in shape and in three levels, has a diameter of 38 metres and a height of 19 metres, measured to the roof of the octagonal tower. Mahakan Fort has rectangular battlements on both its lower and upper levels, while the connected 180-metre long section of the city walls features sema-shaped battlements.

Located a stone’s throw away from the Golden Mount, the bridge is officially known as Saphan Mahadthai Uthit. The name is in recognition of the Thai civil servants from the Ministry of the Interior (Krasuang Mahadthai) who donated the funds for the construction. However, it is the colloquial name, Saphan Ronghai (the ‘Crying Bridge’), which hints at the reason for the construction. The passing of the much-loved King Chulalongkorn in 1910 was a time of great sadness for the Siamese people.
