An early morning 3-hour drive through beautiful scenery to Chiang Rai, with a brief stop at the Hot Springs at Maekajan for a stretch and some fresh air.

Later in the day are stops at two very famous temples, White Chapel and Black House.

Lunch is provided at a local restaurant, before continuing onto the Golden Triangle area. There are magnificent views over the Mekong River where a triangle is made by Burma, Laos and Thailand at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers. For a small fee, you can also enjoy the boat ride to view the splendour of mighty Mae Khong River (Optional) to set foot into Laos (Passport required but no other documents or formalities).

North East of Chiang Rai close to Chiang Saen lies the infamous Golden Triangle, once the center of opium production and trade in South East Asia. Those days are gone. Now the area is peaceful and tranquil dotted with hill tribe villages, ancient temples and markets.

The Golden Triangle is where Thailand, Burma and Laos meet separated by the Mekong river. The border between Thailand and Burma is marked by the Ruak river, which flows into the Mekong at Sop Ruak.
