Sukhothai Historical Park covers the ruins of Sukhothai, literally ‘dawn of happiness’, capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries. The park comprises the ruins of royal palaces, Buddhist temples, the city gates, walls, moats and the water dyke control system of ancient Sukhothai, the capital of the Sukhothai kingdom from the 14th century.

The Wat Mahathat is located in the central zone in the center of the old walled town. It was the largest and most important temple of the empire, located next to the Royal Palace.
