Stop At: Bang Pa-in, Bang Pa-in, Ayutthaya Province

First established in the 17th century, the palace was revived in the 19th century by kings Rama IV and V, the latter adding most of its European styling. Today an eclectic assortment of architectural styles is arranged around manicured lawns, including the intricate Chinese-style Wehart Chamrun, the orange-and-red-striped observatory Ho Withun Thasana (1881) and a Thai pavilion that appears to float on the water. Dress modestly.

This monastery was constructed by king U-Thong in 1357 A.D. to accommodate monks.

Wat Mahathat, “the temple of the Great Relic” was one of the most important temples in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Located on the historical island the large monastery features a huge central prang, a very large principal viharn and ubosot and a great number of subsidiary chedis and viharns. The upper part of its once-massive central prang has collapsed. Today only the base remains.

Stop At: Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, Pratuchai Subdistrict, Ayutthaya 13000 Thailand

Wat Phra Si Sanphet, “the temple of the Buddha Si Sanphet” was the most important temple in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Being part of the Royal Palace complex, the very large monastery with dozens of structures was used by Ayutthaya Kings only; it was a Royal temple without resident monks.

Stop At: Wat Phra Ram, Ayutthaya 13000 Thailand

Wat Phra Ram’s tall main prang (Khmer-style spire) isn’t in the best condition, but it’s definitely worth a visit. The temple was constructed on the cremation site of King U Thong, perhaps in 1369, though details are unclear.

Stop At: Wat Lokaya Sutharam, Thanon Uthong, Tambon Pratuchai, Amphoe Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Chang Wat Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya 13000, Thailand

This temple, constructed at an unknown date, was largely destroyed when the city of Ayutthaya fell to the Burmese in 1767. Its name means “The Temple of the Earth”. In the ruined viharn at the west edge of the temple is a 42 meter long, 8 meter tall recumbent Buddha statue known as ‘Phra Buddha Sai Yat’.

This temple, constructed at an unknown date, was largely destroyed when the city of Ayutthaya fell to the Burmese in 1767. Its name means “The Temple of the Earth”.
