The Horrors of Srebrenica Genocide – A Day Trip from Sarajevo


The horrors of war can never be felt unless the actual stories are retold. Our tour will bring some of the unfortunate moments back to life as we drive towards the once UN protected enclave of Srebrenica where more than 8,000 unarmed civilian men and boys faced their fate. On the way our specialised tour guide will retell the role and causes of the Srebrenica genocide in the bigger picture of the Bosnian conflict. We will also visit the memorial centre dedicated to the genocide victims where a survivor will narrate his experiences and the facts, with a video presentation that follows. We will also pay a visit to the cemetery where the victims of Europe’s first genocide since WWII rest in peace. Then our trip leads us to the town itself where you get to see how the locals live there today. And on the way back to Sarajevo we will talk about life in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The drive from Sarajevo to Srebrenica is approximately 2 and a half hours. We will visit Srebrenica Memorial Center and the city of Srebrenica. Srebrenica genocide was the massacre which happened in July 1995 in which more than 8000 Bosniaks, mostly men, but women and children as well, who lived in and around Srebrenica, were killed. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia declared that the massacre in Srebrenica was a genocide. Potočari, a small place near Srebrenica, was declared a safe zone by the Dutch UN units. However, Bosnian Serb units overran the protection zone and went on to massacre over 8000 Bosniaks. There is video footage from that period, played in the Memorial Center, which shows executions. The victims were buried in mass graves, and to this day, many victims are still not identified nor found. Memorial was officially opened by the former US President Bill Clinton in September 2003. That same year in March, the first 600 victims were identified.
