Vieques Kayaks Bio Bay excursions are guided in solid and semi clear bottom kayaks through the glowing waters of Mosquito Bay, located on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. Mosquito Bay is the brightest Bioluminescent Bay in the world! Children age five and older are welcome to join the tour with a parent or adult, so long as a ticket is purchased for each participant. To do our tour, guests MUST BE aware that Vieques is an island apart from Puerto Rico so you will need to take a ferry from Ceiba or a plane from San Juan or Ceiba and stay overnight at the island. Travel Notice: If returning to Puerto Rico on the late ferry, book our 6:30 PM or 7:30 PM tour and coordinate transportation in advance to avoid an overnight stay. Only 20% of ferry tickets are available online—purchase in person at the Ceiba ferry terminal for the best chance of securing your spot. Our tours have a minimum capacity requirement and may be subject to rebooking or cancellation. Please bring only essential items to the tour.

Your trek to the bioluminous bay leaves at 5:30 PM in winter months and 6:30 PM in the summer months from the Cayman Island Yacht Club Slip B43. Enjoy a beautiful Cayman sunset on the way to Starfish Point. Bring your own beverage, light dinner or snack to enjoy on the boat or the beach. Coolers and ice water are provided. After leaving Starfish Point we head into the beautiful bio bay and spend 30-45 minutes in the bay. You can swim in the bay wearing a snorkeling mask and life vest or stay on the boat to view this amazing sight. Enjoy star-gazing on your journey back to the dock. You might even see a shooting star on a clear night! Tour is back at the dock by approximately 8:00 pm or 9:00 pm, depending on season and departure time. All guests are kindly asked to call and confirm their tour with us at least 24 hours prior to tour date. Please know that tours under ten passengers may not run. Thank you.

Keep in mind that bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon with varying brightness. *When needed, a tarp is used to minimize light from the moon or artificial sources as an extra step to help better appreciate the bioluminescence. Sargassum, a harmless seaweed found in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, often lands on our shores and occasionally emits a scent. All odd-numbered groups or solo kayakers will be paired up during the tour. You will get wet! Dress accordingly. During peak season, high visitor volumes and tour companies may require shifts to enter/exit the lagoon, causing occasional light bumps between kayaks. We will drive for about 2.5 hrs (bathroom stops offered), as you enjoy the lush views of the Central area that then changes to a semi-desert landscape. Upon arrival we will stop for appetizers (additional f&b costs not included). Watch the sunset (depending on the time of the year) as we head out for a 25 minute ride thru the mangrove channels. Bioluminescence is a light created by living organisms through a chemical reaction, biological light. In the gulf it is the algae that create this magical effect. Upon being disturbed, the algae give off a burst of light. Since there are millions of them it looks like sparkles in the water. The wavelengths are in the blue to green area and depending on the amount of algae it will appear as bluish or greenish sparkles. One of the best ways to see this phenomenon is to get a look from above, and kayaking is a great way to see it well. The algae will stick to your paddle, your hand or floating debris glowing for many seconds if you encounter a strong patch. When you kayak over shallow areas, fish will be scared up and it looks like fireworks under water as they take off, leaving a trail of “fairy dust” in their wake.

We normally get to enjoy an amazing sunset, while paddling 800 meters, where we can appreciate the ferry, and some islands as Isla Chiquita and Isla Jesucitas. We will take you to the biggest concentration of bioluminescence, where you will be able to see and touch it. It is just amazing, we have not found words to describe this unique experience. At sunset, this tour leaves from the little beach next to the ferry dock in Paquera. When the nights falls you will be able to see the plankton glow in the dark. For more then a full hour you will be able to see this natural phenomenon and be enchanted how fish light up their path in the water or when you take a swim or move your hands through it. Bioluminescence is found in many parts of the world, however in most locations it is either seasonal or requires perfect conditions in order to occur. Contrastingly, the Paquera Bay is home to bioluminescence year-round but we would like to inform that the moonlight effects the visibility of the bioluminescence and also tides and streamings. therefore, we are not able to guarentee a good visibility of the bioluminescence in the last week before full moon and the evening of full moon.
